Have you ever been sick with a cold and made yourself a warm cup of water with lemon to soothe your body? If you have, then you’re definitely on the right track when it comes to improving your health with lemon water. Lemon has some pretty fantastic benefits for your health, besides just making drinks taste great, (I’m a sucker for lemonade).
Why lemons, you ask?
Lemons are packed full of vitamins including vitamin C, B-complex, iron, magnesium, calcium, potassium, and more. Read below for just some of the amazing health benefits that a small little lemon can do for you.
7 Health Benefits Of Drinking Lemon Water
1. A Natural Detox Flush
The liver is responsible for filtering out all the toxins we unknowingly ingest on a daily basis, and lemons have been found to enhance our body’s enzyme function to help that process along. The citric acid in lemons also helps our body’s natural ability to flush out those unwanted toxins as one of the main compounds in lemon is Citrate, a natural inhibitor of toxins.
2. Improves Digestion
Lemons have citrus flavonoids which have a natural anti-inflammatory quality that, combined with warm water, can actually help improve and soothe digestion. It’s believed that the flavonoids in lemon water help support the hydrochloric acid production in your stomach responsible for breaking down food, thus making it easier on your stomach and preventing indigestion.
3. Promotes An Alkaline Body
You may have heard some debate on the acid/alkaline concept for our bodies but if not, the basic idea is that our bodies build up too much acid by eating the wrong types of food, like red meat, sugar, processed food, etc. When we have too much acid in our bodies, it can lead to negative side effects like indigestion, acid reflux, acidosis, and more.
There is still research to be done, but some studies have shown a positive effect on our health by staying more alkaline. Lemons, even though they are acidic in nature, actually have an alkaline effect once our bodies digest it.
4. Helps With Weight Loss
Now this isn’t going to be a weight loss miracle, but there has been some evidence that shows lemon water may suppress our appetite if we drink it in the morning. Some studies have shown that the pectin found in lemons helps give our bodies a feeling of fullness, which can result in taking in less calories throughout the day. While there is still research to be done, it wouldn’t hurt to give it a try!
5. Reduces Wrinkles And Improves Skin
This is one of my favorite benefits of lemon water as I’ve suffered with some skin issues of my own for years. Lemons are high in vitamin C and antioxidants, both of which have been shown to have anti-aging properties.
Drinking lemon water combined with using it topically, (diluted, of course), can help reduce the breakdown of collagen fibers in our skin, the ones responsible for giving it strength, firmness, and plumpness. Who knew skin care could be so easy!
6. Boosts Your Immune System
Although you will have better success with a vitamin C supplement, lemons do naturally contain a small amount of vitamin C which has been shown to boost the body’s immune system. Plus, they contain potassium. Drink a glass of warm lemon water in the morning, and you’ll give your body a better chance of absorbing these vitamins into your system for an immune boost.
7. Naturally Freshens Breath
Drinking a glass of lemon water in the morning is a great way to freshen up that morning breath we’re all so self-conscious about. It’s also a great natural anti-bacterial, which means it can help clean your gums from any bad bacteria that may be lying around. Combined with your morning oil pulling ritual, your mouth will be very happy!
How To Drink Lemon Water
I know this should be a no-brainer, but there are a few tips to drinking lemon water that will ensure you’re getting the maximum benefit.
Drinking warm lemon water first thing in the morning is said to have the most benefit on your health.
As your body has been asleep for 8 hours or more, having a glass of water with lemon when you wake will give it a kickstart and help flush out any toxins your liver filtered through during the night.
Here are a few different ways to add lemon into your day:
Morning Toxin Flush – Warm up a mug of water (not boiling) and squeeze in a 1/4 sized lemon wedge. Drink first thing in the morning.
Bonus: remove some of the peel and drop it into your mug to allow the release of lemon oils for an added benefit. Make sure to use an organic lemon if you choose to include the peel.
Soothe Upset Stomach – Aid digestion by adding a touch of fresh ginger to your warm lemon water and sip slowly to sooth indigestion or acid reflux.
Calm A Sore Throat – Warm up some chamomile tea with added lemon and honey for a wonderful soothing drink.
Make Lemonade With Stevia – This is one of my favorites for hot summer days, or any day for that matter (I love lemonade!). Combine 16-24 ounces of cold water with the juice of one lemon. Depending on the size of the lemon, you may need to add or take away some water. Add 15-20 drops of liquid stevia for a natural sweetener. Add more or less for desired taste.
Adding lemon to your water is a great way to give your body an extra boost, especially in the morning, but drinking water more often is even more important. Start off slow when adding lemon to your daily drink, as it can be too strong for those not used to it. It’s definitely not a miracle cure, but it does have a lot of benefits that are worth trying!Do you drink lemon water throughout the day? Share your favorite tips below!
