I used to take a few aspirin, or ibuprofen pills, whenever I had a headache coming on, but when I learned about the dangers of taking aspirin, I wondered if there was a more natural way to get rid of the pain. After doing some research, and my own experimentation, it seems there are pretty viable ways to get rid of a headache naturally, and most involve items you probably already have at home.
Natural Headache Remedies
Whether you have a pounding headache from stress, dehydration, lack of sleep, or just being in a loud environment, these remedies should help relieve some of that head pain you’re suffering from. I’ve personally tried several of these and I can honestly say they actually work!
I never would have believed that anything other than an over-the-counter drug could help quell my headache, but I was pleasantly surprised when some of these simple methods really worked. You may need to use several different ones together, as no headache is the same for everyone, but I also have a recipe to make your own headache roller stick that you can use anytime.
Let’s talk about some of the natural ways to relieve a headache:
MagnesiumIf you tend to suffer from frequent headaches, it may actually indicate a magnesium deficiency in which adding more magnesium rich foods into your diet may reduce the amount of headaches you get. In addition to supplementing magnesium through diet, using a magnesium lotion, or oil, topically can reduce pain quickly. I rub a magnesium lotion on any muscle or joint pain I may have to help relieve pain, and it definitely works pretty well.
This one seems like a no-brainer, but I admit that in the past I never gave too much thought to how just drinking more water could help get rid of a headache. A lot of headaches are caused by dehydration, so if you feel like you’ve been wandering around in the Sahara Desert for days, and have a pounding headache to boot, just drink a bunch of water throughout the day and let your body naturally rehydrate.
LemonI talked about the benefits of drinking lemon water in a previous article, but another benefit of lemons are their ability to reduce the pain from a headache. Drinking a warm cup of water with lemon will help relax the muscles in your head and relieve some of that pain.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Another article I wrote is about the benefits of apple cider vinegar, and all the amazing things this magical elixir is capable of, one of those being headache relief. Heat up a steamy bowl of purified, distilled, or spring water with a tablespoon or two of apple cider vinegar and inhale the sweet, tangy aroma for pain relief. You can also add a splash of ACV to your hot cup of tea, with lemon and honey, for a relaxing drink.
One of my favorite treatments, mostly because I love the smell, lavender has been used with very promising results for a natural headache treatment. Put 2-3 drops of lavender oil on your upper lip and inhale the vapors for about 15 minutes.
You should start to feel more calm, relaxed, and with less pain. You can also take a few drops of oil and gently rub your temples to stimulate blood flow and provide a relaxing massage for your head. Another method is to put 2-4 drops into a mug of piping hot water (use purified, spring, or distilled) and inhale the steamy vapors to relieve your headache.
Peppermint is another great essential oil to use for headache relief and can be used in the same ways that lavender oil can. I do have to warn you that peppermint is quite potent, so make sure you take small, gradual inhalations of this oil as it can definitely knock the socks off of you. I learned this the hard way, haha! I like to combine peppermint and lavender oil in a cup of hot water to inhale the steam, and surprisingly it works wonderfully.
Things To Note:
If you do plan on using the water steaming method, make sure that you are only using purified, spring, or distilled water to do so. Tap water will likely contain chlorine, and inhaling chlorine vapors is extremely hazardous to your health.Do you suffer from headaches? What do you use to relieve the pain?
